The True Hybrid Printing Solution

Reading time: 6 minutes

A rapidly changing sign and display market needs flexible solutions to keep pace with changing demand. While improvements to speed and quality are still being made, these are increasingly marginal, and it’s in the areas of value-for-money and versatility that there are opportunities for real differentiation.

Part of this shift towards the demand ever greater versatility is a result of the Covid pandemic, where print service providers, particularly those who had been highly specialised in the past, were forced to adapt and invest in new types of technology, to serve new markets with a more diverse range of applications.

One market response to this shift has been a significant increase in interest in hybrid printers and the obvious benefits they provide in their flexibility and versatility. When Fujifilm completely redesigned and relaunched its Acuity range of wide format printers in 2021, it was, in part, to be able to better respond to exactly these kinds of market shifts. The Acuity Ultra Hybrid LED and Acuity Prime Hybrid are early evidence of this strategy working exactly as planned.

This article looks at the Acuity Prime Hybrid in particular, delving deeper into what sets it apart from the competition, offering some insights into its true hybrid nature and its place in the evolving print industry.

fujifilm wide format printer

A true hybrid platform

What do we mean by a ‘true hybrid’ platform? Aside from the obvious – being able to print to a wide range of both rigid and flexible substrates – what defines a ‘true hybrid’ printer? Perhaps we could start to answer that question by first addressing what it is not. It is not a flatbed printer with a roll function bolted on, nor, for that matter, is it a roll-to-roll machine with a flatbed table as an optional extra. Machines like this have their place, but that place is really only in environments where that additional functionality is needed only occasionally. In today’s print marketplace – where being able to accommodate and deliver as broad a range of work as possible is paramount – these ‘halfway hybrids’ are often no longer good enough.

With a true hybrid, you get exceptional performance, whether printing to rigid or roll-fed media, as the machine is designed with both in mind, rather than one of those simply being a bolt-on extra. And if the build quality of the machine is good enough, then that exceptional performance remains consistent even over very long jobs, whether roll-to-roll or rigid media, providing the ultimate flexibility.

The true hybrid opens up a range of possibilities for print businesses looking for growth opportunities. It is able to produce more work, faster.

Design and build

Fujifilm’s Acuity range combines award-winning UK design, with Japanese quality assurance and meticulous manufacturing processes. This exceptional design and build quality is notable in all aspects of the machines’ performance, but one area especially relevant to the Acuity Prime Hybrid, marking it out as an excellent example of a “true hybrid”, is the media handling capability. The industrial build quality of the Acuity Prime Hybrid gives it the ability to handle rolls of up to 100kg, far in excess of anything that a modified flatbed could manage. Not only that, but the media also tracks exceptionally well, meaning that the machine can be left printing long jobs with minimal operator involvement.

World class inks

When it comes to inks and curing, the Acuity Prime Hybrid boasts another advantage over many of its competitors. Fujifilm’s own UV and low energy LED UV curing inks mean that the Acuity Prime Hybrid is not only faster than many of its competitors, it also prints to a much broader range of substrates. This is because low energy curing also means low heat, which means that sensitive media can be used much more easily, and printed at higher speeds than would be possible otherwise, something impossible with curing systems that require a hotter drying process, for example latex. Lower heat also, of course, means lower energy use, which in turn means lower energy costs, meaning there are environmental benefits as well as potential cost savings, without reducing output.

Importantly, Fujifilm’s UV inkjet inks are also Greenguard Gold certified, making them suitable for a range of interior applications including wall coverings.

True versatility

The Acuity Prime Hybrid also distinguishes itself with its 2.05m printing width, a feature that extends beyond the standard 1.6m of most alternatives. This expanded capability doesn’t come at a premium, making it a practical choice for businesses looking to explore new horizons. The machine’s larger printing width offers the freedom to print rolls of various sizes efficiently, as well as the ability to run multiple boards side by side – while reducing the need for trimming or resizing, saving both time and resources. This versatility opens doors to a myriad of applications, from retail signage to durable outdoor displays.

In an era when adaptability is vital, the Acuity Prime Hybrid provides an ideal solution for print businesses to remain competitive and responsive to the ever changing market.

Proven solution

The Acuity Prime Hybrid is already proving its worth in real business environments.

David Allen, Managing Director of Allen Signs, in the UK, was first in the world to invest in this machine, in autumn 2023. He says the printer’s superb media handling made it not only stand out among competitors, but makes it able to print on difficult substrates, such as metallics, in a cost-effective manner.

Allen says: “Due to our familiarity with hybrid platforms, we sought the Acuity Prime Hybrid as an opportunity to explore the Fujifilm brand further. The printer has now allowed us to carry out our normal production with minimal issues and excellent quality and ink performance.”

Print Specialist at Allen Signs, Matt Ryder, adds: “We tried a job on the new Fujifilm machine, and instantly, it tracked. It was perfect. As for materials, we are yet to come across a substrate that doesn’t work.”

Allen Signs is the first of many businesses in Europe and around the world that stand to benefit from a machine that is both a true hybrid, and a true game changer in wide format print production.

Ultra-high quality

The Acuity Ultra Hybrid LED uses the same head carriage as the Acuity Ultra R2, capable of ejecting greyscale drops down to 3.5pL in size to deliver superb print quality. Combined with an industrial build quality, a linear motor head carriage drive and Fujifilm’s high performance Uvijet UH inks, the very best print quality is guaranteed.

Heavy duty chassis

Like the Acuity Ultra R2, the Acuity Ultra Hybrid LED is built on a substantial welded steel construction, together with solid steel bars, which contribute to the machine’s 8.3T weight. This design not only delivers a robust construction, it also ensures that the printer displays very little vibration during operation, further enhancing print quality.

Linear motor head carriage drive

Many hybrid printers use a belt drive to move the print carriage, often resulting in a reduced life span as well as impacting print quality. The Acuity Ultra Hybrid LED uses a linear motor drive for the head carriage delivering travel speeds of 1900mm per second when using the fast carriage travel speed. The carriage movement is quiet and free from vibration, travelling along dual rails with the carriage supported by 6 large race bearings.

Designed with the operator in mind

A range of advanced features have also been incorporated into the design of the Acuity Ultra Hybrid LED to improve operation and maximise uptime. These include:

  • Media tension buttons controlling the roll functions of the machine are located on both the input and output sides for ease of use
  • The input media roller is adjustable, moving up and down, for improved tension, and to help keep the roll media flat and wrinkle free
  • The durable aluminium media shafts cater for either single 3.3m rolls, or two rolls each up to 1.6m wide. The printer uses a special airshaft which allows two rolls of the same media having different diameters to be run at the same time

Uvijet UH ink

Fujifilm has developed a new high performance LED curing ink for use in the Acuity Ultra Hybrid LED, specifically designed to give the adhesion performance needed in a hybrid solution. However, the ink still delivers the same high coverage and print quality as Fujifilm’s other Uvijet AU and GS inks, with customers also able to benefit from the same low ink usage.

The Uvijet UH ink set consists of six standard colours (CMYKLcLm) and an optional white ink. The printer can be configured with two white ink channels to maximise throughput speeds and print density.

The Acuity Ultra Hybrid LED with white ink allows flood white under-printing for non-white media, over-printing white for backlit applications on transparent media and/or printing white as a spot colour. The new ink range has both Greenguard Gold and AgBB certification.

Applications

Ultra-versatile

The combination of intelligent design features and Fujifilm’s new Uvijet UH high performance ink, ensures that the Acuity Ultra Hybrid LED is one of the most versatile platforms on the market, able to produce an unrivalled range of applications at both high quality and high speed.

Print on rigid media with ease

The Acuity Ultra Hybrid LED’s belt transport and intelligent vacuum systems are truly unique, meaning it can print on a range of rigid substrates previously only possible on dedicated flatbed systems.

This means low cost Correx products for short term signage applications such as for sale signs and building hoardings, can be printed at high speed with multiple panels (up to 5 across the bed) continually printed with a single operator.

Double up with multi-layer capability

In addition, the Acuity Ultra Hybrid LED can print onto Dibond and Acrylics, utilising multilayer printing and white for reverse printing, and two sided applications.

These applications take advantage of the superb transport system and accurate dot placement, and can deliver high margins and additional revenues, previously only possible with a dedicated printer.

Two rolls at once

The Acuity Ultra Hybrid LED can also print 2 x 1.6m rolls, even with different diameters, as the shafts have a differential in the middle meaning the rolls can spin at different speeds.

All rolls are transported perfectly through the printer, producing high quality results on materials such as self-adhesive vinyl, pop up materials for roller banners, floor graphics and billboard paper all delivered at high speed.

Highlights are a clear winner

For both rigid and roll, the Acuity Ultra Hybrid LED can also print white on a wide range of clear materials such as clear self-adhesive PVC, optically clear polyester and polypropylene – all high margin applications for retail applications.

It also capable of printing on wall covering materials, either short rolls up to 1.6m with a textured finish, or on 3.2m seamless wallcoverings for business applications such as hotels and retail spaces.

Short runs to maximise productivity

Roll feeders located on the tables mean many short run applications can be printed economically, with very little waste material and fast change-around times, making the Acuity Ultra Hybrid LED a truly versatile production system.

Spanish wide format specialist Oedim has once again partnered with Fujifilm to expand its fleet of Acuity wide format printers to increase productivity and support its growth. The company, which already owns four Acuity Ultra printers, recently invested in a 5m ‘superwide’ Acuity Ultra R2 Inkjet Printer. The new printer, which has been installed at its 20,000 square metre site in Jaén, Spain, will predominantly be used to print wide format advertisements on canvases, as well as signage for events and building wraps.

Established in 1996, Oedim is a wide format print specialist that prioritises personalisation and efficiency, while delivering on versatility and value. Many of its customers operate in the marketing and advertising sectors, and require wide format prints on substrates including vinyl, cardboard, tarpaulin, textiles and more.

Oedim sought another Fujifilm wide format printer because it was pleased with the quality and reliability of its existing Acuity Ultra machines. It was also very happy with the service it had received from Fujifilm.

The Acuity Ultra R2 Inkjet Printer, which is part of Fujifilm’s new range of wide format printers, is available in ‘superwide’ 5m and standard 3.2m configurations, and Mercury UV and LED UV configurations. Engineered from the ground up, with the operator in mind, it has won Red Dot, Good Design and iF awards for its impeccable design features.

Miguel Ángel Gómez Cano, Managing Director at Oedim, says: “At Oedim, wide format prints are our speciality. Many of our customers operate in the marketing and advertising sectors and require wide format prints – be it on textiles, vinyl, cardboard or tarpaulin. Our investment in an Acuity Ultra R2 has enabled us to prioritise personalisation and efficiency, while delivering on versatility and value – all while achieving growth.”

“Now, with an Acuity Ultra R2 included in our fleet of printers, we can offer our customers an even faster and more reliable service, particularly when delivering ‘superwide’ 5m prints. The machine is not only intuitive and easy to use, it is also reliable and offers exceptional quality. This is proven, as we use it predominantly to print on mesh and canvases and events canvases. ”

Cano says: “Our investment in yet another Fujifilm printer has enhanced our confidence in the company as a trusted and reliable partner.”

Joan Casas, Manager at Fujifilm Graphic Communications, Spain, comments: “We’re thrilled that the Acuity Ultra R2 is helping Oedim meet the needs of its customers and we thank them for being a loyal Fujifilm partner.”

UK-based social enterprise Nuneaton Signs has invested in a Fujifilm Acuity Prime 30 flatbed printer to support its business growth and product sales. The company, which was established in 1982 in Nuneaton, UK, manufactures traffic signage and signs for a wide variety of commercial applications, whilst providing meaningful employment and training for people with disabilities, which affect 71% of its employees.

Daren Hollins, Head of Procurement at Nuneaton Signs said the company sought a new flatbed printer to speed up the production of its signs and manufactured goods. The company chose the Acuity Prime 30 because of its reliability, its ability to produce high quality prints and because it was in line with the company’s budget.

Hollins explains: “We went out to tender with various companies and we chose Fujifilm because we were impressed with the cost and efficiency of its inks, the cost of this printer and how overall, it was able to deliver in terms of quality and reliability – all while meeting our financial criteria.”

He adds: “It is two-and-a-half times faster than the previous printer we used for the same types of jobs. It is also quick to set up and easy to use – which is particularly important for our team members with disabilities.”

Hollins continues: “We visited Fujifilm’s Broadstairs site (in Kent, UK), and were given an extensive demonstration of the Acuity Prime 30, which turned out to be the ideal printer for our business’s requirements. The service provided by Fujifilm was excellent and efficient. When the machine was installed, it was ready for use – factoring our training – within a week.”
